Join Us on Aug. 20 | U.S. Allies to Africans in the Climate Movement - Skill Building Workshop

Updated: Sep 14, 2022

Hello everyone!

Come join us Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 9:00am – 12:30pm Pacific Time for a skills-building workshop around diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) and the global climate movement: U.S. Allies to Africans and Other Non-U.S.ers in the Climate Movement - Are we listening to what we need to hear.

Fifth in a series of skills-building workshops from Sustaining All Life and United to End Racism -- no prior experience required! Looking forward to the U.N. COP27 in Egypt in November, we will practice tools for listening and explore the dynamics of superiority, privilege, and oppressor material on the one hand, and internalized oppression, doubt, and silence on the other, specifically as it relates to being U.S. allies to Africans and other Non-U.S.er’s in the global climate movement.

This event features special guests Janet Kabue (Kenya), Onii Nwangwu-Stevenson (Nigeria), Urbain Bamana (Ghana) and will be facilitated by Climate Hope's very own Founding Executive Director Alma Soongi Beck, Climate Justice Co-Chair, and Mary Ruth Gross, Membership Chair, from the Climate Reality Project, Bay Area Chapter.

In particular, we hope to cover:

  • What do people living in the U.S. need to know about supporting and backing the leadership of climate activists in Africa and other places outside the U.S.?

  • What are the ways that living in the U.S. impacts our (in)ability to notice, listen, or include people from outside the U.S., including people on the African continent?

  • What are ways that racism and U.S. exceptionalism will arise around COP27 and other global climate organizing efforts, and what can we do about it when it happens?

  • What does an inclusive movement look like?

Please register today for this insightful discussion with our special guests. Come join us to learn together, strengthen our connections with each other, and continue building our DEIJ awareness and skills in our Chapter. We look forward to seeing you there!
